EU policy in the field of Carbon Farming and prospects for Ukraine

On November 28, a highly significant event took place in Brussels, focusing on EU policies in the fields of Carbon Farming, Carbon Farming, Carbon Capture and Storage/Utilization (CCU/CCS), and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR).

The National Scientific Center "Institute for Soil Science and Agrochemistry Research named after O.N. Sokolovsky" had the privilege, through the direct participation of Natalia Prozorova, to represent Ukraine’s perspective. The discussions emphasized how sustainable land management can support post-war recovery, contribute to climate change adaptation, and align with European policies. A particularly valuable part of the event was the discussion on integrating Carbon Farming with ecosystem services - soil, biodiversity, water resources, and resilient landscapes.

We highlighted that such technologies could serve as the foundation for restoring not only soils but also entire areas impacted by the war. Ukraine has the potential to become a key player in sustainable land management, and the EU's experience is invaluable for advancing this process.

Thanks to the organisers and all participants for the inspiring ideas and the opportunity to collaborate toward shared goals! Special thanks to the LANDMARC2020 project coordinators for initiating and supporting the Ukrainian case study based on the NSC ISSAR’s work.
